Received: 25/10/01; accepted: 14/02/02 ABSTRACT Tuberculosis is both a nosocomial and an occupational infection. The prevalence of positive tuberculin skin reactions at King Abdulaziz University Hospital, Saudi Arabia, was investigated by testing 298 health care workers. Conventional tuberculin skin testing was performed using 0.1 mL of purified protein derivative injected intracutaneously. After 48–72 hours, induration size was recorded. The prevalence of positive tests (induration ≥ 10 mm) was 78.9% overall, 60.0% for Saudi Arabians compared with 81.8% for non-Saudi Arabians (P < 0.01). The mean response size (8.9 ± 7.1 mm) for Saudis was also significantly lower than for non-Saudis (13.9 ± 7.1 mm, P < 0.001). To enhance the protection of both health care workers and hospitalized patients, effective preventive measures and annual tuberculin testing of health care workers should be considered.

Phenomenon of Local Skin Reactivity to Bacillus Tuberculosis

New toxic substances in certain tuberculin, O.T., and B. typhosus culture filtrates are described. These substances are capable of eliciting the hemorrhagic necrosis characteristic of the phenomenon of local skin reactivity provided heterologous bacterial filtrates of high potency are used either for the intradermal or the intravenous injection. The toxic substances apparently have no relations...

Tuberculin reactivity as a predictor of survival time in inoperable bronchial carcinoma.

One hundred and two patients with inoperable bronchial carcinoma who had tuberculin tests at the time of diagnosis were followed up to see if there was any correlation between their degree of tuberculin reactivity and their subsequent survival time. There was a significant difference in survival between positive and negative tuberculin reactors (Log Rank Test P less than 0.05), the former havin...

Repeated tuberculin testing in patients with active pulmonary tuberculosis.

OBJECTIVE The proportion of tuberculin reactors in a population and the intensity of tuberculin reactions have been shown to increase with increasing exposure to mycobacterial infection, eg, repeated BCG immunization. These observations suggested that tuberculin reactivity would become uniformly high in individuals with a high mycobacterial load who did not have a known cause of anergy. Since t...

Prevalence and determinants of tuberculin reactivity among physicians in Edmonton, Canada: 1996-1997.

BACKGROUND Health care workers (HCW) have historically borne a heavy burden of tuberculosis (TB) infection and disease. Unfortunately, physicians are rarely included in HCW surveys of tuberculin exposure and infection. METHODS The prevalence and risk factors for tuberculin reactivity were determined for a sample of the 1732 licensed physicians in Edmonton. Stratified random sampling was used ...

Tuberculin reactivity and subsequent development of tuberculosis in a cohort of student nurses.

This retrospective study documents a strong correlation between tuberculin reactivity and the subsequent development of active tuberculosis in student nurses. 12% of the 25 student nurses with tuberculin reactions above 20 mm developed tuberculosis over a period of 2 years, compared to only 0.3% of the 341 student nurses with reactions of 20 mm or less. The implications of these findings for pr...
